All year we wait for Oktoberfest at the TurnVerein. Last night's event surely didn't disappoint...there was cup stacking, sausage, St Paulie girls, Apelkorn, Jaegermeister chicken dancing and BEER. Oy, I'm a little fuzzy today but it was all worth it. We went with Mark, met up with Brian and Lisa and ran into old neighbors Peter and Ann. And there were flashes of Robin Little. The upstairs got not only Rich and I on the dance floor but ultimately got Brian and Lisa rockin out a bit too. The difference between the crowd upstairs is soooooooooooooo dramatically different than downstairs. Or should I call it Up stares, where its more baudy, more drunky and LOUDER....but downstairs has its merits, like you can count of the Chicken dance being played every half hour. And downstairs are the kids in their dirndl and lederhosen all the way up the seniors dressed head to toe...both have equal value and a place in my heart. But upstairs is where Jaegermeister was drank....so there's that. Safe cab ride home and priceless memories with our friends....next year I hope, we hope you'll join us toooo.

I think the innocent act of dressing up for Halloween two years ago started something inside of me. Now I did some acting in my youth but for those that know me, I can go from extrovert to introvert withing the span of the same hour. But thats me-Rich on the other hand is an extrovert most all the time. So this year we both agreed to do something that we didn't really pre-meditate upon but embraced nonetheless. We dressed up like zombies with a whole bunch of other zombies and walked around downtown. Yes out in public. We didn't prep too much but the end result was still good and showed that we “committed” to the event. Rich and I have not only embraced being “joiners” now we are a step away from attending the next Renaissance Faire. Our latest event was the Seafarers and Pirate Festival, out on the Garden Highway. Once I accept an inkling of a concept, I'm off and running. I spent all week acquiring our costumes and accessories...Plus the timing of the event and the recently opened Halloween Stores worked out to my benefit. So I got frilly shirt for me and for Rich the most perfect hat. Oh and swords for both of us. Yes Lori, I was embracing my inner “Bloody Jack.” There were sooooo many kids with mock swords, mock fighting but having real fun. There was mead, rum, wenches, blacksmiths, real sword fights, stocks and a pirate band. The guy who looked like Geoffry Rusch with the rat. Might have been a little TOO into the event but thou shalln't judge. Not only was hes dressed to the nines, he had a mini pirate hat for his rat! It really makes you wonder, what the hell is his “day job?” All said and done, I had more fun dressed up than I would have if I had “street clothes” on...plus now we already have our Halloween costumes dialed in!!!!

Ocean Grove, NJ or as the locals call it Gawd's square mile! Ironic a Marck reunion would be in a Dry Town, don't you think? As soon as we got there, dropped our bags and we were porch bound. That is where the majority of our time was spent or stoop sitting or playing hotdog badminton. Saturday Night went like a flash but even on our first night I knew this was going to be something special. An event where time stopped, normal life was secondary to this encounter and we were all comfortable and open to the adventure it was, may I introduce the Jersey Shore Gin and Tonic Chronicles.

Saturday night went quick but included a walk to town for Ice Cream. And ice cream must include Rainbow Sprinkles according to Hazel.

Sunday morning started with a walk to Asbury Park and the Boardwalk. It was spectacular to see landmarck's that I've heard about all my life. But it wasn't until recent that I was introduced to the Stone Pony, which we walked by but didn't get a chance to go in. The day ended with a thunderstorm in true East Coast fashion. I have never experienced an East Coast thunderstorm and this one was not gonna disappoint. We watched from the porch until the sideways rain forced us inside where we played Trivial Pursuit '90's Edition...the stoopidest edition ever! But add G & T's and the entertainment value is bumped up. Trivial Pursuit is kinda like Monopoly, by the end you don't really care who wins just as long as the game ends :D

Monday, Daniel and Julia were scheduled to join the posse and our little troop would be complete. Hazel and Julia are inseparable and the cutest cousins! They were always ready for a wardrobe change and any opportunity to play with their dolls. The clan together enjoyed a huge pasta dish that Daniel pulled off and could only be capped by another ice cream run!

Tuesday we had some time at the beach with Rich terribly disappointed in my wave riding abilities. But no harm no foul as tonight we were heading to Sushi, then SeaSide Heights Boardwalk. Once we mastered the incredibly difficult parking ticket machine...we were Boardwalk bound. First stop-bar (Hello?) cause alcohol was just what I needed before getting on the dreaded Pirate Ship ride, where I literally thought I was going to COME OUTTA MY SKIN. Without hesitation I was whisked onto the ride, where NO wasn't an option...then I see David standing in front of the ride...No, really WTF? As soon as the ride started moving backwards it happened, at that very moment I knew that there was going to be a problem. All the blood ran from my face and I was cramming my body into the back of the seat to brace myself. I couldn't talk but Rich knew that I wasn't OK and hats when he started “talking me down.” If I could have made them stop the ride, I would have. But instead I had to do my “yoga breathing” and hold on while the Tasmanian devil in my stomach did his dance until it was over. Frack that, apparently I can't do THAT anymore...add that to the list of what Age does to the 'ol psyche. Thankfully, I could do the baby roller coaster, survived those damn swing thangs with minor skin crawlage and finally hit my stride with the tiltowhirl I actually enjoyed the Tiltowhirl. My opposite was Dan and Ch/Kristine, as they went on flippen every ride on the Boardwalk and huge smiles all night. David and Denise did their damage on the games and came home with what three prizes? There was Khor's Frozen Custard and enough HBO series, Jersey Shore representation to choke ya. But fact was, we were in it...Jersey+Boardwalk+drinking='s some Paulie D's and Snookies!

The next day was action packed, Joanie showed up early and we were gonna spend the day at the beach. This goal was achieved and waves were riden. I ate so much sand, it was ridiculous. Need I say, sand wound up in places it shouldn't but hats what happens when you cartwheel in two inches of water...even better than winding up akimbo next to a 7 year old yelling at me, “yeah you ate it, me tooooo!” ...plus there was Daniel from 15 yards away screaming, “Good one Kris” and giving me the thumbs up. Rich and I were like little kids, laughing and swimming. It was just good for the soul-not a care in the world. That afternoon, Scott prepared for the nights Pizza-paploza event. PopPop and Delores were joining us for alittle more porch time. It was great to see Rich's Dad and Delores and hear so many stories.

Thursday Rich and I were on our own while everyone else went to visit Adrienne. After yet another epic nap we headed to the Asbury Park Farmers Market but the weather rained the entire thang out. So we were resigned to the PathMark Market where we came up with alittle of this and a little of that to make for dinner. The troop returned and together Dan and I whipped together a altogether not bad pasta dinner. Bellies full the nights endeavors had just begun...there were plans for a game or two of PIG. Do you know that game? Its like Spoons but instead of pulling a spoon, you stick your tongue out. Then if you lose, you are banished with the goal of getting those remaining playing to talk to you. And this was where I wound up quite quickly as I'm not so quick of picking up on the tongue sticking out of my fellow players. But once there were more on the losing end, it made the challenge to get the playing members to talk to you much funnier. (that’s a word, I swear). The classic was Rich busting Dan by asking about a band-aid he had on...guess you had to be there. The hours whirled away between Pig and Uno. There were G & T's drank, shit-flinging and love abound.

Friday there was no way to escape the news that Hurricane's comin...and we had to make the unhappy decision to shorten our trip and get a flight out early. David and Denise were kind enough to pack us up and drive us to the airport before the roads got too crazy, they were evacuating the shore and HC.

Hard to believe the vacation was over but the memories will live on forever. I have never enjoyed a vacation like this one but I have never had a G & T before so I chalk it up to that, that and the magical alchemy of our group where the meshing together of East and West Coast Marck's resulted in much Joy. I know Jay peeked down on us and enjoyed a laugh or two with us as he was greatly missed.

Now home, its back to work and the routine of our lives but with a larger heart and a smirk on my face as I'm just waiting to get back to the Shore.

Clips of Faith Beer and Film Fest

If we aren't talkin sushi, we are usually talkin beer! So Friday nights adventure should come as no surprise. Davis was one of the lucky cities, New Belguim Brewery's Clips of Faith Beer and Film tour was stopping at. Now I'll admit I wasn't particularly interested initially but Rich wouldn't let it go. After I reviewed the website further, I was convinced-whats wrong with yummy beers and cool film shorts. Plus, back in the day (like 10 plus years ago) I used to travel to Montana for work and Rich's trip present was always a 6 pack of Fat Tire Beer-cause we couldn't get it here.

The evening was cooling off and Davis was a buzz! We got on line after putting our chairs and blanket down for perfect viewing later. I love the inflatable film screen. So we got our passports, describing NBB's 20 plus beers available for tasting. Kids in a Candystore! We tried dark, light, sour (too sour) bitter, sweet, peppery and smokey! Beyond the joy of beer sampling...there were other booths to explore, NBB did this right. You could buy shirts OR screen print the shirt you were wearing...yes another excuse for Rich to walk around without a shirt. Oh, then there was the BlendOMatic!!!! For a mere token you could customize a beer sample to your taste. The BlendOMatic was genius machine with a mesh wire top-see if you can find the picture I took over the top :D

Then there were the movie clips-Spectacular, moving and genius. Hopefully you'll be able to see the Oakland bicycle gang, Jackson Hole and the talking beer bottles films. All in all, I'm so glad Rich prodded me to go-a perfect summer event.

She had us at Woof!

When I think about losing yet another one of our furry family members, my heart breaks all over again. Allie passed this Monday and her timing seemed appropriate, as she HATED fireworks...but I thought given her inability to hear anymore, the holiday may be less stressful for her. I was wrong.

What I remember most about her was her goofy ass smile...if you had a treat, popcorn or pizza crust...there was her smile and twinkle in her eye. She survived a 13 tooth extraction all at one time, rattlesnake bite, pet psychic, overly dramatic sister Tiger Lily and a growing puppy, Chiso. Her simple joy and charm are what made her so special to us. In her youth, back when she was the puppy (pre-teener) we'd take Tiger and Allie to Goethe Park and once unleashed, she would literally fly through the grasses-utter joy. Only to be topped by a visit to the river. Over 14 years with us (we think she was around 2 when she joined our family) she was a staple to daily movements in the house. And it wasn't until 3 weeks ago did we stop taking her for daily walks...living with an old dog is dramatically different than a young one.

You know the first day we met her, Rich bent down to say hi and she put each paw on him and kissed him...she had us at Woof! That was the only kiss she ever gave either of us but the marck she left on our lives is huge.

Chiso is confused and depressed, guess we all are. What with Meepers passing not two months ago...times are tough and we were blessed by all that both animals added to our lives. May Tiger, Meeps and Allie get some time together and though they aren't here physically, they are all in my heart and for that my life is much fuller.

The past couple of months have not been the easiest but we do seem to find ways to keep having fun.

The hardest change has been the loss of our beloved fur person and family member, Meepers. He is missed so and his memories live on. The rest I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

So these are pictures from the Sactomofo mobile food truck event that we volunteered for...they expected 1000-2500 and got 10,000-12,000 people, utter success. Rainey camping trip to Mt. Diablo. Tattoo'd Love Dogs (Rich was taking pictures with anyone or is that his second wife?) in the Park-very perfect. Megan and Dereks wedding, our Mill Valley adventure with a stop at the Ferry Building Farmers Market and finally a picket of the newest Marck, Paulie D!!!!

Well it has been a stressful, rain-ful and event-filled month. I had a lapse of memory trying to find pictures after Friday night's BockBier Fest (imagine that)...so I had to sort all our pictures by date and dang we were busy. Guess thats life! I'm thankful the waters have receeded in Sacramento and Spring is here. And optismism is high! We both have many “irons in the fire.”

The stress release this week really was necessary and delicious...

Edda and I had our Girl Glass experience where we got to create our own Hot Glass paperweights. It sounds tame but when you are there, standing infront of the blazing kiln-an unknown setting, trying something brand new...it was thrilling. We each got to add our favorite colors and unique design flair to our pieces and during the process got to meet two super cool artists. Now we are just waiting to pick up the final products.

Then Friday we picked up Mark for a TurnVerein event. Now if you read the blog, you know we have had some adventures here and Friday was another one to add to the books. We got there right when they perform the ceremonial tapping to the Keg...and really, the Germans know how to be happy. Theres food, singing, beer and dancing...everything is keyed on enjoying yourself. And ya know what, we met the challenge...from the cup towers, Apfelkorn and dancing upstairs...just FUN.

Thanks Universe...apparrently we needed our own Pyle experiences to say life...ya know what, you may be challenging, overwhelming and exhausting but theres still time to enjoy and share with friends.

but when you host a party like SUSHIBOWL III...it can't go unmentioned. And then there was snow, skates and yes even BEER.

So for a quick recap, we had a total of 25 people for Sushibowl....a record for Rich's sushi making skills...but he shined. I don't think anyone went without...even the newly converted were snorking up fish, festivities and the FOOTBALL. Thanks all for making the event one not to be forgotten soon.

Oh then there was a trip to Sly Park for Chiso's second Snow encounter. Plus since we are like 3 months post surgery, I can say with confidence that her surgery was worth every penny.

Gonna throw in a picture of Lori and I as King Skate...we went during their last week before they closed. I was sad that they are closing but it was a coming together of community those last days and they will truly be missed. Nothing like the strobe lights, waifing popcorn/nacho cheese smell, remembering exactly how to skate, almost falling, regaining that control...then there were those kids built for skating, showing off their skills. Plus the teenage girls there to show off for the boys...lipstick, tight shirts and bubble gum...ah youthful memories. Specifically, the thrill of holding a boys hand at the roller rink could not be equaled for me at age 10-11...and even at 45 the skating rink holds a special place in my heart forever.

Ok, lastly there was The Shack for Sacramento's Beer Week. Oh muy gawd, last Saturday Rich worked on the flooring for the new office all day and I had to convince him that going out was a good idea, especially because we had nothing for dinner. The Shack was hosting five local micro- breweries, a band, raffles and yummy Shack food. So we got in, bought our tickets, stamped our hands and yes got a beer. There was fire pits to warm by and later to roast S'mores at...and the band was lead by Mike Blanchard from Tattoo Love Dogs fame. Left and right were reminders of friends and our history living in Sacramento. Bob. BOB! So we snagged a muffletta sammie, some of the yummiest of beers and kicked it, listening to Mike Blanchard & the Whispering Chingaderos...

All in all... though there are things to get us down, we seem to seek the wild and wonderful with our friends in Sactown! Next we are looking forward to hosting our SF friends, Vicky and Richard coming for sushi Saturday...more SUSHI!

Edda's birthday ends January with a bang!!!

Edda always has a way of bringing us together for her birthday and gets us outta of the house and out on the town! This year she did it again...and I got a head start, by spending the day shopping together with her. Oh Home Goods, how I love you. But come evening time, we cleaned up and met over at one of our local Fav's, The Corner.

Edda had set us up in a private area where we could kick back and have the run of (covered) patio with heaters and a beautiful water fountain.

Once we all arrived, the drinks started as did the stories. The boys traded Droid app.s and updates-oh Brotah! It was a great event even though the rain decided to pour, there was no stopping a good time. Happy Birthday Edda-love you. K

So Mr. Holloway challenged us, yet again, to attending the Professional Bull Riders competition at our local ArcoArena.. Tickets, Wranglers and boots purchased....we were “in!”

While initally I have a internal struggle, wondering if I could truly enjoy the event outta concern over the poor Bulls. Ya know that they put a strap or belt over their “b@lls!?” That would make me angry tooo. So I consulted my best friend, who's as big of an animal lover as I am. I asked her if she thought that I could “handle it?” First she looked at me, to verify I wasn't joking and agreed that we were both equal in our love of animals... then confirmed that I would LOVE it. She not only convinced me that I was in for a great time, she actually was jealous that they weren't going too!

Rich and I donned our new duds and started the evening with David, from Rich's work, for dinner. Both men in hats..Rich in his brand spanking new...black hat and David's white hat, whip stitched with rawhide, was more authentic...as David actually rides horses. Then we headed into the arena, through a sea of plaid, mustaches and dare I say, tight jeans, big hair and a dash of cleavage! The marketing at these events is huge, from Ford, Stanley tools, Dickies work wear, Ariat boots, Jack Daniels, Wranglers, Jeep ect. You are bombarded.

The show started with huge iron/silver bull heads pumping out flames through their nostrils and blazing red eyes. Then we were blessed with an announcer who was a mixed of Larry the Cable Guy, Richard Simmons and Robin Williams. The combination of humor, rock n roll music, lights and wafting testosterone set the stage to redefine just exactly how long 8 seconds could last. There were 6 gates that the riders were launched from. I didn't exactly know which would open and unleash the next combination of terror, power, fury and ferocity (its that belt thang again). But after the first ride...I was into it. Its combines the ceremony of the visual (thank you big screen )of the strapping your hand in, calming the bull enough that he didn't kill the rider in the stall, whipping open of the door. Some came out like a shot and bucked...others bucked out...it was crazy with the dirt and snot flying. All the excitement freezes though when a rider is hurt...the clowns (crazy profession-but so valuable) react quick to get the bulls away from the rider, so an assessment can be made of exactly just how hurt they may be. Just writing this and remembering is stressing me out again...because we saw one rider get really hurt. To see someone's head get stomped on is sobering and can silence an entire stadium. But the show must go on...so they wheeled one rider out and had the next one launched out. The endorphins, adrenaline and beer made the night zip by and damn that Brian was right-it was AWESOME!

I draw the line at Monster Trucks...Brian I don't care what you say-I ain't doin' it!!!

Sunday I convinced Rich to hike the Stebbins Cold Canyon (http://www.berryessatrails.org/guide/trailguide/coldcan.htm) trail at Lake Berryessa. Mind you, I have the familiar knowledge of the trail as I went with friend, Lynn back in September. Apparently it takes just about 4 months to forget...but this trail is BRUTAL. My confession is I think I wanted Rich to experience the trail just to know what I went through. Because if there was one thing that I don't do well it is rock scrambling.

You start in the valley...a casual stroll along the stream. Quickly the environment turns cold with tree canopy and the stairs/train ties start. Then come the switch backs and you climb, the initial ascent was 1200 feet. I was the one dogging the trail...huffing and puffing. Rich was stoic but little did he know, that this wasn't the hardest part. After an hour and a half we reached the top of the ridge. It is a stunning visit point...but you see ahead the ridge goes higher. You walk/hike at least a mile along the ridge. Once you reach one crest, you are only gifted with another one even higher. There were times where you are on all fours scrambling across boulders on the edge of a 200 foot cliff. I think its like the 7th crest that is the final one and again the view of the lake, Winters and way off in the distance Sacramento is truly amazing.

Coming down the ridge was scarier due to the descent being covered in clay mud. So from the top being at 1500 feet...coming down fast was not an option. You picked each step carefully and with forethought. Initially I told Rich that the total hike should be like an hour and a half...I was wrong...we were out there 3 hours. By the end, the endorphins filled us with pride and joy. Plus we were thrilled we survived. I mean Rich didn't strangle me :D

Holiday Season '10

Flying with the Nephew

Took the day off to go down to the Bay Area ...To IFLY...second time for Kris and I and Ian's first. The bastage is a natural...2 seconds into the gig he is sailing around like a bird... We all had a blast as evidenced by the silly grins. After flying we of course went out for Indian food,,,,duh,,, flying works up the appetite. Was great to spend time with Ian and looking forward to more fun in the future

RPM Superstars

Well after a few months of trying to find a date we could get together...we went to RPM last Friday and the fun was infectious,...Between Derek's shoes,the girls slow motion
laps,Tim's kids and Marks questioning the times...we had a blast. I highly recommend it if you haven't tried it...brings out the Mario Andretti in all of us.

The “T” bomb was dropped and we are on the other side of the Christmas holiday-holy crap! This year we enjoyed the Race to feed the Hungry...with Kris original hats..ok, one was made with a dog toy-but who's to blame me? When I'm on a roll...stay outta my way. The holiday was capped with Rich's rockin a Guy Fieri recipe (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/guy-fieri/mean-green-turkey-machine-recipe/index.html). We were joined by my Mom, Brother and Nephew and Rich's Brother (Greg's looking a little Hagrid...as normal for this time of the year). Much yummy food was consumed and stories traded. The next day we had a “play date” with a past co-worker from Kaiser...his wife and I had previously discussed similarities in our addiction to glass...so they came over and made ornaments with us. Then not quite ready to really start holiday shopping, Rich and I did a dry run at the Pavillions and came home empty handed. Rich is not a big fan of the holiday...thank goodness for “on line” shopping. Think the rest of the weekend was a mix of food, movies and hunkering down for some really cold days.
Our baby, Chiso goes in for leg surgery tomorrow and I am a worried Mom. But the end result is to give her the freedom to fly as only puppy's can. Bring on the holidays...I am accepting cuz I can't ignore them.

Scorpio Train Excursion
The Sacramento Posse boarded the California Zephyr “love” train to Reno to do some birthday celebrating. Mark and Edda, Anna and Troy, Sherrill and James (to follow Jessica and Kyle) and Rich and I...headed through the scenic Fall glory with a dash of snow here and there. Oh to live in Northern California, what a treat.
Well the train ride was sold to us as a party train but due to one majorly cranky dining car “soup Nazi” our party aspiration were only postponed and we “whooped” it up, in spite Mr. Crankypants! Up the hill, half the group played Scrabble and the other, Apples to Apples and the giggles and laughs could be heard on other cars, let alone floors! There were snacks, stories, sneeaky beers here and there and some lady who REALLLLLY wanted to talk about “Dancing with the Stars. ” It was only a 5 hour trip...thankfully we experienced no delays and found ourselves in Reno by early afternoon.

Now Sherril, donning her Conductor hat, led the way to our final destination: Silver Legacy. We all checked in and it wasn't long until Rich and I found the Penny machines. Yeah, I flippen rock the PENNNY MACHINESSSS...no wait a minute, I really didn't rock them...I enjoyed the hell outta them and Rich was the Rockstar, winning $100 bucks on a Penny machine. That was all she wrote, we were aboard the Crazy Train after that! Many free beers were consumed, Troy enjoyed his time playing Kitty Glitter and Mark gobbling while playing the Turkey game.

And Edda, well Edda did the smartest thang ever, she moved our party from the slot machines to Silver Legacy's Baron Bar. The band started off slowly only to have the lead singer in my lap talking to the entire bar, while she tried to convince me to sing...I hadn't drank “THAT” many free beers but her next victim was Mark, who CAN sing! He assisted her in singing “Girl, you really got me now” by Aerosmith. Within a half hour of awesome cover songs, Edda and I were on the dance floor. What a delight to be soooo surprised by a band and the lead singer was quite the entertainer. Plus she loved Rich playing pa-pa-parazzi, haming it up for the camera. We drank through those winnings before heading to our room.

Now all these tales from Friday night must be countered by the pounding of my head and churning of my tummy, Saturday morning. My husband was soooo kind, taking excellent care of me and allowing me the benefit of a day of rest....and a movie. Really, there's not much else to do in Reno, so I indulged the day away and prepped to do it all over Saturday night. Anna booked reservations at Roxy and all were in attendance (poor Kyle)...all I know is I ate a pound and a half of Bacon Cheese Bread with my Appletini :D We all enjoyed an excellent dinner and returned to the casino floor. But the difference was there were no big winners and funny the band just wasn't as good the next night.

I've been considering exactly how to go about a post to reflect the sad news of losing a tenant in the Marck family. Rich's brother, Jay passed away suddenly. The loss has rocked the family and extended family. Rich and I returned to New Jersey for his Memorial. Rich's sister, Cookie and husband, Tom joined us flying from California and staying at the same hotel. We bonded through tears and laughter, propping each other up, when necessary. Cookie adjusting to losing a younger brother and Rich, his older brother. I was amazed at the strength and grace of our nieces and nephews. They are all grown adults, some with children of their own. Jay loved his Parental role and relished in Grand-parental role! Adrienne and Jay didn't miss a holiday where they could lavish love and attention on all. Jay also was very close with his Dad and every holiday event included Dad and Dolores. Jay lived his life to the fullest and the way he wanted-not to be glib, but that's all I ask for from life. But don't get me wrong, his passing has rocked us to the core. It is sad that it took losing a sibling to get us back to New Jersey...but the banter and crap flinging started from minute one with the Nephews and Niece, as it runs strong in the Marck blood. I hoped Jay peeked in on us, felt all our love and loss and chuckled in the comfort we took in teasing each other. I will leave my post at that...Love to Jennifer, David, Daniel and also to Adrienne, Scott, Donna, Joan and the lovely grand nieces: Julia, Hazel and Cici.

Piloting the Golden Gate Open Water Swim

Are you ever amazed when you actually pull off a plan, you know, one of those plans that have like a thousand caveats, plan b's and hoops you have to jump through...well that was our day. So let me set the stage, Step 1...get up at 4am, 2...meet group in West Sacramento and wait for the Highway (yes highway) to open at 5am, 3...drive to SF and maneuver around road closures due to the Avon Woman's Marathon. 4 walk kayaks 8 blocks and that just brings us to the start of the adventure.

So...through gritted teeth, Rich asks me while standing on the beach...”um Kris, since we plan to take a fishing boat to the start of the open water swim...exactly how do you plan to launch our boats?” Frack...a valid question! If you've ever kayaked, you know the instability of sea kayaks but launching off the side of another boat, 3 feet out of the water was logistically “challenging” but REALLY...for uncoordinated me, a virtual impossibility...yes another hurdle...so we get to the boat, gingerly get out and into the bigger boat...and hoist our boats aboard. Well looky there...we could do it...How I doubt!

So the boat is filled with 40 swimmers and 10 pilots, like ourselves. The tension is palpable, shrouded in fog...radios blared, checking freighters paths, tide switched to ebb and time to dump kayaks back in. “Game on!” We were back out and the water went from rough to crazy, swells from 4 to 6 feet high with eddies that strip you of your paddle in an instant and freighters wake. Those who've been out there know about the "Potato patch" under the south end of the Bridge-its deadly on its worst day and highly technical on its best. The pictures don't show all the "crazy" going on, but trust me Capital K Crazy!!! We were in IT, down the face of one wave and up the face of the next-there is just nothing like it. Front and back but coming from side to side too...we now have the kayak to be topped. It was both scary and exhilarating...but the point of our trip was to pilot these crazy-ass swimmers from from the SF side of Golden Gate to the Marin side.

The horn blew and the swimmers jumped to swim to the start on the beach. Rich and I have piloted a number of times in the past and its like riding a bike...you know the “establishing” look...they all start out just adjusting to the freakin cold and the wait until they take their first look to gauge where they are going. Then after a few moments, some come up laughing and smiling and some come up looking like “what was I thinking? And how can I get back to the safety of the boat and warmth of a mere towel but then they settle in, focused on their goal. The Sacramento swimmers rocked it, in fact Stephanie won the entire race (but it wasn't a race...right!) In fact, Rick Bartels, one of the organizers and insane man who organized the Sac crew....after surviving Rich's strangulation - He made the passage with ease, a smile and a song in his heart. HOW DOES HE CONVINCE US-BOTH SWIMMERS AND PILOTS TO DO THESE THINGS???? (For those who remember, the Tahoe pilot trip-Rick, the Santa Cruz trip-Rick...he's a crazy mo fo) So before Rick touched Lime Rock, which was the finish line...I see this seal head pop up, 18 inches long...so a BIG seal...but these folks don't lose sight of the goal. All but one finished and two pilots dumped. Rich and I finished hearts full and so proud to add this to our list...check, kayaked under the Golden Gate bridge!

Great day capped with lunch with Cookie and Tom at Tres Agave where nephew Ian works.

While if you asked me if I could do, what I did today-I'd say no but through true adversity...the body carries us through. Here's to: Rick, Tim, Greg, Bob, Keith, Chris and Stephanie-you guys rocked and so glad there weren't any great white sightings....

Sacramento's Turn Verein hosts their annual Oktoberfest and as in past years, this year was again well attended! Just to get in, we had to wait in line for over an hour because the hall was literally filled to capacity. You couldn't get in until someone else left. I chided my friend Sherril who got there at 4:30ish for getting there tooo early. But by that point, when she and daughter, Sara popped by to find us still in line one their way out....who was laughing then?

Once inside, surrounded by hundreds of crazy-German and faux German revelers, we bought sausages, beers and started the search for seats together. Now mind you, the hall holds 300 plus people...and most every chair was occupied or “saved.” Once our group of four split up...we could finally sit down and inhaled a beer and sausage.

Buddy Brian and his daughter Elizabeth joined us. Honestly, you can take any ordinary event and “add Brian” to the equation and the end result is always more than you expected.
Eventually, we were able to all sit together, singing, toasting, chicken dancing and cup stacking...funny how all these activities all made perfect sense last night. Plus look at my face when Brian starts telling me about having Rich join him shark fishing in the Bay. The dance floor downstairs was packed with families and more of the older folk but upstairs, Upstairs was where the “young” were. It was like walking onto a movie set for a frat party minus the toga's, with the band playing “love her madly” from the Doors. This one guy was Djrunk...and decided to launch himself into my picture frame...see if you can find him. We stayed for one song, one was enough...it was pretty crazy.

It was a fast and furious event but we packed a lot of fun into the short time. The event could only to be capped with Appfelkorn....oh sweet Jesus, that's some Dangerous stuff cuz its like sour apple hard candy. Hope Bevmo sells that!!!

RPM It's what ya need

RPM Baby....Well after months of talking about it we finally got Tim to go to RPM after the board meeting and company BBQ today. It was a bit shaky for a while,,,trouble with the Groupon I bought not usable till tomorrow and such but after some arm twisting we agree to meet up at 4PM. Show up and there is a car wreck in front of the building...Bad JUJU...The Holloway's arrive and Tim too...so in we go and sign up....then we lose Tim....comes back looking a bit Green..Drinking Sprite.something at the BBQ is twisting his gut...but he soldiers on and we get into the race attire,,,head sock and fire suit. Get video trained and get onto the track. Tim is still looking a bit iffy...Into the cars,,,thumbs up...Race On Baby. Brian in the lead car me 2nd and Tim third....10 minutes later Tim has the biggest smile in the universe,,,stomach is fine and he wants to go again....The Holloway gang is beaming and all are giggling like school kids. RPM is the fountain of youth....Any one up for some hot laps???

Late Labor day post

Better late than never! We headed up the hill caravaning with Anna and Troy. No trailer but tent camping, quick stop in Grass Valley to buy a bucket from KFC and then Omega or bust! The smell of the campfire motivated a quick tent assemblage and trek down the hill. Omega gatherings are always a surprise reunion of friends. This holiday's theme was counter to the other event going on further up the hill...you know, BURNING MAN. Kelly in his infinite wisdom came up with the Burning MAM idea. So the campfire was covered by a pine frond skirt, clothes pins for attaching blessings/or offerings, stick arm, crazy eyes and yes a bacon tongue.
Just as the sun set, we set her afire. Oh did she burn...with a scent of bacon.
It was a great time around the fire. Friends, drums, laughter and opportunity to catch up.

Indy 300

Sunday morning..Early...all were welcomed, as long as you were on the bus on time with a bloody Mary in hand!!! Indy 2010! The Marck's joined the Holloway posse for yet another Infineon adventure. Brian started the addiction by testing our sanity, four years ago...by requiring us to meet his crew in Dixon at 6am...and yet we kept going. Note his crew only grow. Thankfully the start time ebbed...to 8am.

This year we had an “official” legitimate bus, with its own bathroom (Jennifer should we rethink that choice???) With this new feature, there were ground-rules...Number one was use the spray provided, should you make number two. The second rule was everybody sits down in the bathroom....otherwise we may need to call in a clean up crew :O0
Next, give Jennifer your cell number for the “ up to the moment” directions. Once we arrived, we threw our coolers down and ping- text number one...we were to be at the Danica talk in 15 minutes...that means walking a mile-ish to get there...but we were committed. So there we were...and there she was. Danica was candid in that she was starting 24th outta of 25. She was gracious, funny and real. Thanks Blake for the pictures...he got the advantage atop Rich's shoulders. I enjoyed her talk but next was Dario Franchetti (yum!) Team Target. He explained some of the latest news in “Indy World”...like new blocking rules, drivers that he didn't like and how age played over a driver's daring and success. He called out Milka...one of the female drivers and her sloppy driving skills. However, when it came to gender...he didn't note a difference...he just wanted to win.

Then it was back for the “Indy Lite” race and hike back to our seats. This race was like the opening band...just there to charge you up and prepare you for the main race. ping..next text, Garage and Pit tour! Clomp, clomp, clomp...back across the track. The excitement of the the garage and pit is you never know who you'll see...last year Rich and I backed into seeing Danica, up close, right before the start of the race. This year no “close encounters” but the thrill is always there...now time for the main race...clomp, clomp, clomp back to seats. “oh sweet, icy Tecate' how I love you.”

Team Penske and Target ruled the race...leaving the excitement in the crashes. There were crashes even before the race started. My fav crash was Simonea going under another car and pulling out, continuing without missing a beat. And our Danica started 24th and ultimately she wound up coming in 12th.

It was a great day filled with racers, friends, fans and the loud rumble of adrenaline....Thanks Brian (and Jennifer) for pulling off another successful racing encounter!!!!

I'm soooo thankful for my friends taking such gooooood care of me. Rich has learned to keep me sane, is to keep me busy...and many friends have adopted this approach. For example Lisa took me out for tacos and beers, Julie tried to get me outta the house, Lori O took me to lunch and a movie, Brian had us come out to Roseville Raceway,to see him do a couple “test drives” in a friends sprint car, the Pyle clan had a BBQ, Derek and Meghan Apples to Apples night (or was it ThankYou Card Etiquette night?) and lastly, Rich agreed to continue working on our bedroom remodel...so while my heart and head are clouded with some heavy thoughts...I know this too will pass. And it will pass better with the love and support of a wonderful husband and the best of friends!!! Here are some pix from our weekend...and I'm even smiling in some of them ;)

Rollercoaster o life

Over the past year my doctor has been checking, probing, testing and retesting me for breast cancer. As is the life of many women, we have so many parts that require monitoring-damn girl parts! Some of the women in my life who have gone through the “FIGHT” have demonstrated strength, optimism and hope and their example in grace provided me a vision for which I hitched my wagon to. I have a personal history with my Mom surviving breast cancer; therefore, I have jumped on each concern and test. Last Wednesday, due to suspicious calcification's and papaloma cell growth, I had a lumpectomy with the love of my life, there by my side (yes with his camera/phone). I'm recovering by being forced to eat comfort food, watch daytime tv, loads of Food Network, reading, napping, jigsaw puzzles, receiving loads of love from friends and family. The best news came in today, from my surgeon, that no cancer was found. Back to recoup'ing as the animals are loving it and icing the “ol girl!!!”

Ps. I know my mini surgery is minor but a reminder our path in life is still yet determined and full of different experiences from which I still have stuff to learn from.

What A Week

Well its been a hell of a week. Eppies was Saturday and Team ARFCD Flood Fighters did great. David was a bit hampered by the Mountain Bike but next year with a better bike we will RULE.

2:11 is a time to be proud of and Christians 6 minute miles went a long way to getting us a free breakfast. As for the old man of the crew a 47 minute Kayak leg was not to be ashamed of...only saw 2 boats pass me and I left quit a few in my wake.
Sunday I insatalle the Laminate floor in the spare bedroom....did I mention that it was 103 degrees that afternoon....Weight lose program by home remodel .

Tuesday I left for the DHS conference in Memphis. We were trying to work out the operational details of deploying a floating levee breach repair.... harder than I had thought it would be. It was a trip to be invited to a Dept of Homeland Security conference but I think it went well.
Memphis is wicked hot and the Mississippi is humongous.. some good BBQ and Music but home is where I wanted to be by Friday.....however....Delta Airlines had other ideas ...they had a plane computer fail and after being in the airport for 6 hours I ended up back at a Delta paid for room for the night. 6 am flight to Atlanta on Saturday and that meant getting up at 3:30...yes that is east when I need to go west but after a whole bunch o hours in the air and airports ... home and safe on Saturday. Spent the day reconnecting with my wife(Yup still in love with my wife)
Back in the bedroom today and rented a cordless finish nailer to install the molding,,,,(That is a cool gizmo)...Move the furniture back in and started on the new closet shelves...WHEW...cant wait to get back to work..Glad to be home....

Friday I attended a friends funeral, and although I felt surrounded in love...my heart was crushed and I really can't make it through any rendition of "amazing grace" without losing it. Chris Littlefield was one of the two bosses at Hill Physicians and died of a sudden heart attack. Boy this was just shocking and the tremors are still being felt. I don't cope well in public when "big things" are going on, so the best thing Rich and I thought to do was stay busy. So Friday afternoon we started working on the guest room. Plus his sister and bro in law were scheduled for a visit the next day....

Saturday we woke early, started on the room and ended in cleaning the house. Tom and Cookie showed up with beer in hand (genius) and willing to have a full Marck Adventure. So given the unbearable heat, Cookie suggested going to the river. So we're were like... lets walk upstream, jump in and float back down to our house. IT WAS FREEZING but the numbness became familar and comfortable...we were the floating four heads bobbing down the river...it was just what we needed. Once back home it was time to go to Oto's cuz Cookie and Tom wanted sushi. And of course Rich was in, with bells on! We just love these twoooo and together we just laugh, trade stories, eat and drink. Plus the sushi was PERFECT! We capped the night with BBC's An evening with Johnathan Ross (I love that show)

It all was soooo sudden and then they had to leave...so all in all-very productive weekend with a splash with our fav family!!!! When your heart needs pure joy and healing...Cookie is the "go to!' and for that she has a very special place in our hearts and lives.

Omega, Omega, Omega

So there are those that shall remain “nameless” requesting a blog update...so, two beers down...and I'll give it a whirl.

Camping at Kellys this weekend was utterly drunk-tastic and just what I needed. I'm employment challenged right now and we didn't have any plans...so we threw in the towel, and did what we've wanted to do for years. Packed the dogs, bean bag game, Woody, as many beers as possible and headed up the hill. Kelly's celebrates his birthday July 4th and his gathering calls to many across state and nation lines...his land is in the Tahoe National Forrest just below Truckee.
We arrive midafternoon, only to be shocked at the number of cars there already...the place was packed. Might I remind you, we camp at Kelly's but Labor and Memorial day...but its been years since we were there for a July fourth. July Fourth is Party-spectacular, young and old, near and far....and thankfully its the one time a year I get to see certain friends...its more important to me than any class reunion...Kelly's reunion is special in that the memories I share with these people are some of the most cherished memories I have...or those that I remember :P

So we set up Woody...2 minutes....I Love WOOODY!!! Then we opted to introduce the bean bag game...its like the most simple game but it unifies a group. And though Rich fought this game...he's grown to love it, My heart doubled in size when Steven, Kelly's brother joined in and was loving it...I thank my nephew Noah for turning me on to this game.

Kelly's is home of the most diverse, dynamic and dramatic people I've ever met a few key time througout the year. And now those people kids are equally “super cool.” Yvon and Jude (the man) were there in thier unflinching glory and I got to visit with Robin, who I haven't seen in 5 years, Mary Linden in more like 15 years ect...and then there's Taylor...Rich and I watched Taylor grow up and as an adult, this dude is just rockin it- His way. Love you Taylor. Love to the entire Kelly posse...except the guy drinking “Jack” from the bottle-he was kinda a DOUCHE.

Then it was the quest for the Super 8. Eddie O'conner, from the East coast, and practically Kelly's Royalty, had a vision. He brought a Super 8 film of Kelly's July 4th from '81...we were all a twitter and bowed in awe...but he neglected to confirm the freaking machine worked. Rich worked his magic for an hour, stole my hair tie and tried duct tape...ultimately to be disappointed. That damn machine refused to work....so it was off to dinner.

The transition from twilight to night time is realllly when the magic happens...bellys full, seats are found next to the campfire, liquior is poured and the music begins. It always starts slowly, quietly almost a whisper....but then one hour in the hooting and hollering is in main stride...then ultimately this partyier pooped out...leaving Rich and Mark at the fire. And I didn't mention due to the impacted camping options we parked Woody RIGHT NEXT TO THE CAMPFIRE. So although I was done...the party had found its rhythm and that rhythm included Mark chanting “Omega, Omega, Omega” Now all that I could deal with but when the chant changed to “girls in the fire, girls in the fire....” I got a bit nervous...not nervous enough to get up but enough to put ear plugs in. I knew I'd hear the stories of Rich and Mark's exploits in the morning. RIch showed up in the middle of the "what the hell time is it?" morning....

Ok so my internal clock wakes me most mornings at 5am...um after going to bed a 1am...I got up a tad later....and Rich getting to bed at 3 (yes he denies this time profusely)....morning came whaaaayyyy tooo early for him. But although his hands hurt from the 4 hours of drumming...think his head was a bit fuzzy but heart full of doing exactly what he wanted, as Kelly's heals all that ails you.

As soon as we were there and set up, it was time to head back home...so we packed up the poochies and soul's smiling... we headed back down the hill. Quickly down the hill to to beat the Pyles to the In and Out in Auburn...two Double Doubles please.

For our 20th wedding anniversary and Rich's 50th we planned a South Carolina adventure. It was a balance of roughing it and enjoying life in the lap of luxury...cuz that's how we roll! We flew into Atlanta to start...and I”m still reeling from the fact that they charge you for each checked bag (WTF?). With the three hour time difference we got into town just in time for dinner. We walked downtown Atlanta, only to end up back at the restaurant closest to our hotel, Meehan's Public House. We started with a pint and launched into a bag of fresh, homemade salt and vinegar potato chips. Oh muy gawd, straight from Heaven. Ok, this will tell you how much we were enjoying them, a woman came up to us and asked, “what are you having, cuz the way your enjoying it, I just had to ask?” So we let her have a taste and she was “in.” She went back to her table to order her own bag. Then we shared some bangers and mash, (not a kindly euphemism) nothing wrong with sausage and potatoes. We rolled out of Meehan's newly smitten with the food, the service and of course, the beer.
The next day we popped in the audio book that we'd brought with us (The girl with the dragon tattoo) and headed to Charleston. We are rockstars, NOT in our exotic rental car...a Kia, Rio. Five hamsters under the hood. Five hours later, we pulled into our hotel and go to grab our bags, to my surprise I found a colony of ants living under my bag. It was one of the grossest thing that I've ever seen with their baby eggs...so with a quick call to Hertz, we were able to swap the car, for a less “ant-filled” one. Dinner time again, so we headed downtown Charleston. We found a local brewery and enjoyed the first of many meals that included fried green tomatoes-delish.
Thursday we headed to the Edisto River to meet up with the rest of our crew for our four day kayak/camping trip on one of the world's longest black water river. Driving through rural South Carolina...Rich and I drove in silence. Be it nerves, apprehension or fear...we had no idea what the future held for us. Plus today was Rich's 50th-so it was a perfect way to celebrate the landmarck event.
Within 5 minutes being there Rich realizes one of our guides was the same guide that we had over 10 years ago~ CHARLETON!!!! What a treat, we loved him and knowing him put all our fears aside. The first day was a “getting to know you” encounter for the 14 people tour and reality check that you'd be responsible for packing you're own shit and its gotta fit in your boat. So whatever you planned to bring...reconsider and bring a third of it. We packed our tandem boats and it took six of us to move one boat at a time...can you say group effort? Before we go, its time for the serious talk of “hazards of traveling the Edisto.” Yes there are alligators, cottonmouth and coral snakes, poison ivy and less threatening was the armadillahs. We learned that should a 'gator chase you, you'll need to run in a Z formation, as they aren't smart enough to go straight...and they don't move so fast when faced with quick turns. As for the snakes, keep your watch out on both on the ground and in the skies. Cottonmouth's stay in the trees and should you startle them, they will fall from the trees and bite you. One bite and you are dead!...did I mention this was Rich's birthday? He's a trouper!
So off we floated, Deliverance Tour '10! All the romantic thoughts I had imagined of a black water river were realized! There were cypress trees, exotic bird calls coming from different directions and moss strung trees. The Edisto river is impenetrable water, more a tobacco color and taking us downstream. Shortly it was time to shore up and set up your tents, dig a latrine and get prepared for the change from day time to night time on the Edisto! We dined on pasta with smoked trout- oh how we suffered! Nightime fell and we were delighted to not see one or two fireflies but thousands. Between the stars, the fireflies and the smell of the night. All would have been perfect if it wasn't for the damn humidity not releasing its strangle hold on us until, say 2 am. Ok, now as you know I'm a Native Californian and I know heat but I didn't know the evils of humidity. But really even for South Carolina we were having “extreme heat”...where 100 degrees feels like 110...oh the horrorah! The next day our end point was going to be the thrill of the trip, the Treehouses!!!!
Worry of 'gators and flying snakes ebbed away and we focused on staying cool-thus the Water Wars began! Kayakers always have a bilge pump, should you take on unnecessary water. The life saving tool has multiple functions, as it works really well to drench your fellow 'yakkers tooo! The lure of the treehouses was not only that they had futons but they also had proximity to ice. And you know where ice can be procured so can “BEER!” Some Chicago-insssss refused to leave their treehouse until one request was acheived and without it, they would not leave the tree all night. One guide was sent to get ice and we held the other one was held hostage. We forced her to drink Patron tequila until she gave us Charleton's cell number. Then we all volunteered Stacy aka Deputy to call and convince him that should he meet our demands of frosty, delicious beer. Plus we negotiated in exchange the release of his partner. We'd have to let her go eventually cuz she was the one cooking our meal. Our demands were met and that Ice Cold Bud Light never tasted soooo good. Honestly the beer was good but the Shrimp Boil was even better! We ate like royalty with fist-sized shrimp, corn and potatoes-unbelievably delicible. Night fell and with the combination of crickets, the rolling sound of not only the river but the creek that split our little treehouse island Doesn't this sound relaxing? Add in my demands to sleep in the loft (what was I thinking????),the loft was the highest part of the house, which translates to the HOTTEST! So I don't know if I was delusional with humidity but even with the luxury of a bed...I couldn't sleep. It was unbearably hot and between the river and the creek, the relaxing sound now alternated from the haunting sound of muddled conversations to the roar of rushing waves. Then there was the cannonball splash in the middle of the night that woke most of us in the treehouse. No one knew exactly what caused the sound but sure sounded like a alligator tail slap to me.
The next day started under a dark cloud over us due to finding out that one of our co-campers had taken ill and was going to have to leave our little crew. We were losing not only Maeve but her lovely brother Neal. Then there were 12. But we prevailed...another day of kayaking. We learned about Tupelo trees' knees, the yellow warblers and brown water snakes (non-poisonous). The third day ended at a luscious sand beach. Doesn't that sound comfortable, to actually sleep on the sand-Not! Then we ran into armadillo's (did you know they are practically blind and completely rely on their primary sense of smell?), chiggers, poison ivy everywhere and then there was the locals. These three dudes (or as Charleton referenced them as “local color”)who crossed the river and lured two of our co-campers away from the group to spent the night with them. Lets see how's that story go? Was it that they left in their swimsuits for a nightime romp of deer hunting via truck.? Did I hear moonshine, banjo and swine-life? and really do I have this right, they call him “Rambo?”...did someone hear a chainsaw? oh muy!!!! 3am the rumble of the truck woke us from nightmares of their possible kidnapping but by 7am they'd traversed the back across the river and our group returned to 12-phew!
Now it was time to make the last leg of our trip. Ya know we spend good money for these adventures and leave with lifelong memories along with over 100 plus chiggers bites...all in all we met some great people, slogged through life to remind us how just the basics can truly sustain you...by basics I mean: company, food, sleep and a shared place to pee.
We planned to venture forth to Myrtle Beach for three days of pure indulgence; however, during our last paddle we shared our excitement and Weatherly said “you don;'t want to do that!” She said that Myrtle Beach wasn't for us, it was like a cheap Vegas with arcades and drunk idiots. So embracing her recommendation we canceled our reservations and off to Savannah we headed.
I had always wanted to go to Savannah after reading the book, “Garden of Good and Evil”. We pulled the trigger and we were Savannah-bound. And on Charleton's recommendation we headed to Tybee Island to do a bit of East Coast beach action. The water was clean and warm with small waves. Rich and I reverted to children riding waves and enjoying the beach in ways you just can't in Northern California. We walked the pier, shopped the kitchy shops and lapped ice cream by means to cope with the excruciating heat....seriously we shopped just for the AC!!!!
The next day we booked another kayak trip because we'd been told we'd experience dolphins. 8:30 am the next day we were there and ready for another adventure. This one was a little disappointing with only three dolphins sighted and the other kayakers in our trip were completely green. So we embraced going slow and enjoying our guide. Preston. Preston made dinner recommendations for us...he demanded we go to the Pink House-a Savannah landmark. So we did as he told us. The Pink House is a historic landmark dating back to the 1700's and a true authentic Savannah experience. On Preston's recommendation, we ate downstairs in the tavern....we split an ordered the fried green tomato salad and per instructions... I ordered the flounder with apricot glaze and Rich had the duck. This was expensive but truly one of the best meals of our lives. Plus the bartender took really good care of us, telling us about Food Network doing a show on them and a little more about there history, like that the tavern was one of the most haunted places in Savannah. The next day we headed back to Atlanta and even ventured to a Braves game (reallyyyy are they pantomiming the chop chop motion?) only to finish the night back at Meehan's for a pint...all and all-TRIP OF A LIFETIME. Some people may say, “we'll always have Paris” Rich and I can say, “we'll always have South Carolina!”

We were invited to our friends cabin on the Russian River and treated us to a crabbing, kayaking, cabining adventure. Saturday we drove up only to be completely bowled over with their perfect bowling lawn backing right up to the river. We launched right into the normal “River” life...played a little, told stories, kayaked, ate and drank....laughing the entire time. It really felt “homey” as Brian and Lisa not only brought their krazy kids Elizabeth and Blake but in tow was poochie-Tucker and kitty-Cocoa. Saturday was a day of preparation for Sunday's events-CRABBING.
Oh wait I forgot to mention “Ted.” Ted is a fellow River-ite and after some wine was consumed the stories started...and then there was the goldfish bowl of a wineglass Brian gave Rich...and it no time Ted and Richie were the pair...oh muy gawd hysterical. We learned much about the history of River-ites!
Sunday we woke up at the crack of 8, doth Blake protesteth? Yeah, he wanted us to be on the water as early as possible...but Brian was intent on demonstrating his stellar breakfast stills. Then after packing up and hitching up the boat we were enroute only to be turned around at the launch site. This should have warned us of future events...but NOOOooooo we plunged forward....launched else where only to hear the walkie talkie squawked, Rich confirming that they we roaring around the Jetty and they were hooting and hollering only to call back to confirm the engine was dead. The skipper relunctently got on the horn and confirmed “its dead and they needed Lisa to come save them with the other engine.” So easy peasy, no wait....how's that story go? Brian almost dropped the old engine with himself following close behind....but with the new engine racing at a max of 4 mph....and crab traps already placed, someone was going to have to get them. So thats where I was able to join in, Blake took his job seriously, he was the Hooker and barked orders to ensure maximum crabs! Two rules of the boat, “quote Jaws at all times” and “keep pulling, never stop pulling!”We flippen caught 10 Duncheness crabs and two Red Rock....that day could only be outdone by the meal! I fully embarassed myself but I had to be teased away from the table with Rice Krispy Treats. Then we all cuddled in for the night and enjoyed watching the movie, “Up.”
I slept great, ate even better and feel like we were truly indoctrinated! That was a vacation outta a movie and we are indebted to our friends for such a treat!!!

Wonderfully exhausted...starting Friday night. We (against my protests) braved storm clouds and ventured forth to Auburn, Yes Fast Fridays started and there's SpeedWay Bike racing to be had...Brian sent the email and we were in. So sitting in Auburn Ale House (our tradition) eating something called a CHEESE LOAF and its hailing outside...we are maniacally laughing...but the Holloways confirmed the race was on rain or shine and we better get over there! There were turbo sidecars, muddy racetrack and Auburn-ites (did the announcer really just joke that he'd shoot the store owner if they didn't have Jack? yes Jack Daniels....oy) We couldn't stay long cuz we had plans to go to the Maker's Faire in San Mateo on Saturday. So we headed home after 10:30, nitro methan in our noses, huge smiles but anticipation for Saturdays adventures.

Early Saturday morning we picked up the Mark and Mason and made our way to San Mateo. We tried to prep the newbies for what to expect, Steam Punkers, rocket launching, and hands on science, craft and art. The Maker's Faire doesn't disappoint...except to receive the news that after like an hour Brenda couldn't find parking and wasn't joining our little gang :(

Mason made a cool rocket and got to launch even with the 10mph winds! We walked our feet off but I broke from the pack to "girl shop" in the craft section called the Bizarre Bizarre while the Boys went to the Makers Shed to shop for projects. Well my feet started throbbing...so I decided to catch up with the men only to be stopped by a line to get into the Makers Shed...strange! So I text Rich..saying I was waiting to get in. Then it dawned on me, while people were passing me to get in and going in the exit....I was in line for something else...then I see him, Adam Savage from Myth Busters. GEEK HERO! So I stayed in line and got my picture taking with him. Rich was soooo Jellllly! Then off to the Mentos and Diet Coke performance...over a hundred bottles....so fun. Then when feet were about to fall off we agreed it was time to head home. GREAT DAY only made better by Edda inviting us to dinner-saved by Chicken tacos.

So since that couldn't be enough, I had to wake up early again this morning. I volunteered again to help at Kaiser's Veggie Race. Well last year I gave out water and had a good time, this year I started as a pepper and ended as a Banananananana. I ran the 5 k in costume, rooted and cheered for 4 hours. I musta given 5000 "high fives" to the kids racing....my back is sore, feet blistered, barely have a voice and HEART FULL.

Bathroom Remodel Update

Well with lots of help from Mark,(Million Thanks Dude) The window is finally in. Lowes got then replacement for the one that was broken in transit on friday....Soooo this morning with rain on the horizon we jumped into it...and lo and behold...LET THERE BE LIGHT....Its is gonna take a while to get used to the fabulous light level.. The rain is just off the coast and headed in so I hope the Caulk holds...will know after work tomorrow..fingers crossed.. Tile soon..woooohooo.

What happens in Vegas...

So I get a I received a cryptic email Thursday night..."call me" from Jerry. So, I do...no answer. Later I recieve a call from a high school friend, that I haven't seen in 20 years. "...We are in Vegas, get down here!!!! I laugh and blow it off, at first,,,then think about it and since the bathroom remodel is on hold waiting for the window, I start checking fares and rooms...booked the 6 am flight Friday and find myself in the room by 8:30. Total of 7 guys, who all turn 50 this year in Vegas. Bought tickets for the Santana show Saturday night and CONAN O'BRIAN Sunday....we raced go carts ..Ate killer sushi at NOBU and had a blast at the Hard Rock. Expensive and painful, at times..but all in all worth it! Probably wont go to Vegas again soon but had fun. Santana was awesome (three drummers) and Conan was even better (Andy Ritcher, masterbating bear, Triumph and Freakin MIKE TYSON)..my seats sucked but I got bumped to the floor to fill some empty seats. Back to the grind but the memories of Vegas are keeping me laughing.

bumpy couple o weeks

So last Monday my Mom was taken away by ambulance and spent five scary days in ICU. Happily I can report she's doing better and is home. One of the nurses said we could bring her favorite food into her...so although not the best picture of her...here she is enjoying the first food in three days...I'm so glad she's better. Now time for moving her and my Brother into their new pad...many stressors, hopefully after moving in they can have more normal and calm existance. My Brother was the ringleader and was calm in the face of danger-I love him for his strength. My sister came down too and between the three of us we were able to keep moving forward. All the while Rich kept life moving on the homefront...allowing the bathroom remodel to act as his diversion. I'll post some pictures from our Saturday trip to bask in some sun for a short respit...life is precious, treat it with love and respect.

Well Kris had a Chinese face reading class all day in Novato so the hounds and I made a day of driving the Point Reyes /Tomales Bay. Stopped at the Rouge and Noir cheese factory after the curvy roads cause a bit of puppy puke. I found an open field and got them out for some romping....Tall grass for acres, dog heaven.. But Allie came back limping.. So we had to throttle back a bit for the rest of the day. We had a snack at the Point Reyes visitor center and then wandered up highway 1 to Marshal and Chiso got her first taste of salt water,,,,thankfully not too much. Frisbee at the bays edge for a while and then off to Dillon beach where they both got their fill of sand and surf. Totally fun day. We went on back to Novato and picked Kris up and motored home with sleepy dogs dreaming of salt air and sandy beaches...Cant wait for next trip.

Our weekend was a nice balance of chores and fun. Started with a long walk on the river with the girls Friday night. Saturday we headed up the hill, to Penn Valley to work on Margaret's entertainment center. I really have little to contribute, so I sit and chat, while Rich works cords, wires and such. The best thang about Margaret is...even though I see her almost everyday...it always feels like I haven't seen her for months and we are never at a loss of things to talk about. Rich had hoped to share a computer with them but unfortunately it crapped out up there :( so he worked on their computer and blueray. We also enjoyed Mike's killar margaritas. Then off to Maria's for dinner-oh muy gawd sooooo goood. It was a long drive home but worth every minute of it!!!

Sunday was for chores and everybody was loving the sunshine! And with the extra time we commited to making a gourmet meal...beef tenderloin with gorgonzola, pasta with basil, arugula and roasted grape tomatoes and finally a mushroom salad that was out of this world. So all I can say is Burp and have be got leftovers for the week :D

So um yeah, I was obsessed with going to the circus after reading, Water for Elephants. Rich, again let me go...while I bought a new outfit, bought him a new outfit (if its for a guy, is it an outfit????), got a hotel room and pet sitter...all to indulge in our first trip to Teatro ZinZanni. At SF's Pier 29 lies a Spiegel Tent the nations second a permanent circus. Its a dinner and show set up.

Well I would say it exceeded my expectations...balancing physical feats of strength, grace and skill with spicy humor and singing from opera to disco!!! We saw extraordinary hulahooping by a Romanian bombshell, jaw dropping acrobatics and a human pretzel. I love being completely enthralled while enjoying delicious vittles.

Then today we ventured to the Academy of Sciences to see the Rain Forest and the living roof...Golden Gate park continues to astound...what a perfect day to enjoy the city!

Ours was a smallish group but perfect chemistry...the combination of Mark, Tim, Brian, Blake, Markie, Lisa and Elizabeth, chips, salsa, cheese, dip, beers and enough sushi for a small army. The twist was Tim bringing a luscious bucket on KFC...yes pure evil...Rich was all hurt cuz he was making salmon this, tuna that and I was harshing the bucket. I love the shared group experience of all watching a commercial and ending in uproarious laughter, all screaming over a bad call and simultaneous groans over seeing Pete Townsends belly...then there is the win of the underdog-flippen heaven.

I like to get the little Wheat Grass plants for the pets and realized that since Chiso's moved in...she's never had a "in door" plant to nosh on. Over the past 15ish years I purchased a number of these plants, the cats love to eat the grass and they usually last two-ish weeks. So being the proud momma, I offer it and go about my business. So a minute later (I swear) literaly I turn around and heres what I saw...

I love the holidays or at least the lead up to them but really they were great and glad for the new year. I had a fun pre holiday shopping spree with my Mom and Sister. We went to Home Goods, each had our own cart and we'd get what we want from each other and put it in their cart...kinda a different approach but it worked. But then I got a cold and kindly gave it to Rich...so our holidays were kleenix filled, quiet and we stayed very close to home. Plus my goal, if this doesn't sound too self consumed...was to be healthy enough for my birthday extravaganza. I love activities, activities that I've always wanted to do for my birthday...so this year I wanted a small group to go to Tres Agave, in Roseville to join us in a tequila tasting. I set it up way in advance and even went so far as hiring a driver....so I could be enjoy myself freely. So although Rich and I were still alittle snarky the day came, and the fun ensued. Mark and Edda showed up at our house and Ellen, our driver snaked through the city and there we were....Roseville is like another whole city within our own city and the Fountains are so shmancy. And since it was December 30th, the holiday lights were out and the holiday feeling was in the air. We met Margaret and Mike there and then Anna and Troy showed up.
Our hostess joined our table and she took her job seriously. She entertained us with tails of distilleries and made us “learn” before the final moment when we tried our first tequila. It was the blanco then we went into those with the stronger agave flavor. You could really taste the similarities to bourbon and sometimes scotch, either way...smooth as silk. The group was engaged, fricken funny and consuming “happy juice.” Then after four dramatically different tastes...they capped the event with a Largggggge taste of whatever was each individuals fav....and then we ate. So not only did I have the best margarita of my life, I experienced luxurious tequila and we dined on sum good eats...so if you haven't got it by now I highly recommend this place...and all in all, I'm OLDER and any wiser I was, I quickly took care of that by destroying that synapse...Happy New Year all and I loved my birthday

Carl's in town from Canada!!!

my first choice was paintball but what with the rain...we had to opt for Plan B. And I had a Plan B...in fact I've been wanting to do this since we saw it on Good Day Sacramento. So we woke up and game on...we were going Indoor Surfing with the Nephew. Carl weaseled the secret outta us over lunch. We lunched in South Sacramento, Todos Un Poco...if you can try it ...its the best Mexican/Italian restraunt ever.

We got there off schedule so we had to wait around an hour but we made the most of our time with video games...then we changed into our suits and COWABUNGA!

Carl willingly went first and although the first ride was short he came up smiling. Then Me and then Rich...we were all smiling. Cuz really you have little control initially but you get the hang of it pretty quick. I stuck to the boogie board all but once (note proof) but the boys enjoyed both! There was the barrel rolls, the complete "epic fail" (which I mastered quickly) the "laundry lint"...where you end up in the back in a heep and the "break the elbow"...all were experienced by each of us in are own time. For one hour we laughed, smiled, surfed and pulled suits outta crevices!!!

Carl today you are a man and have the face hair to prove it! It was great that you were here to share this crazy experience with us. The flips and unsuspecting sumersaults made this adult slip n slide an utter joy for young and old alike!

Thanksgiving 2.0

We were lucky enough to not only have one great Tday but two! The first with the Pyles, their friends Don, Bee, Deb and Barb...great food, company and times. The turkey was phenomenal as was the smoked ham. When we got home we had to check in on our neighbor, Nelson...who'd just returned from vacation. He loves the girls but Chiso has wiggled her way into his heart. So I wanted to bring her over as he's seen her grow and change more than anyone else...and with her chameleon transformation lately....I knew he'd be tickled. So we had a great reunion and the girls were spoiled with the attention. Its funny how neighbors, good neighbors can add to the fabric of your life.

As for the rest of the weekend we committed time to housework and chores that needed attention...but there were also movies watched, art worked on, dreamy bloody marys and indulgent eating...and we capped all of that with yes another Thanksgiving. So today Rich started our own turkey at 9am. Greg came over and schooled us on Rock Band! Another wonderful, stuffing turkey fest.

we snuck outta the workweek a day early

We had great plans (visualize sweeping hand gestures....) in Tahoe. We booked a cottage at our fav place in Kings Beach (cuz they take dogs) and we were going to meet up Rich's Sister, Cookie and her hubby Tom. PERFECT....well maybe not so much. No problem getting up the hill Thursday night...clear as a bell. We stopped at a fav dinner stop, Lanza's and got two killah pasta dishes...and Cheesy Toast (Chiso's new nickname). So all's good...we watched some TV d hit the sack early. Friday morning...we got up and took Chiso and Allie to the Tahoe National Forest up behind the cottages. Then headed into Tahoe City for bagels and thats when the storm started. Within the hour we had 4 foot swells and up to 50 MPH wind gusts. We called Cookie and Tom to find out if it was as blustery across the Lake? Yep...the wind kept whipping up and in came the snow...so by 3 Rich went to the grocery store and bought supplies, a movie and wine and fishtailed his way through the snow and hunkered down we did. Cookie and Tom did the same thing. We had an official Snow Day where we did NOTHING. It was great and a great first snow experience for Chiso....and once we stopped fighting it, we relished in not being able to do anything. Thankfully we metup with the Lynchs back in Sactown-lovethem!!!

Laptop surgery

Well my HP TX1000 laptop died a month ago...lights worked but no Boot Up...total black screen.. Tried all kinds of ideas...removed and reseated hard drives ,battery , ram...nothing. So I bought a new ASUS laptop and have been getting ready to dump the old one...but b-4 I do I decided one more time to see if I can fix it...I find a post by a kid on youtube showing how to heat up the moterboard and reseat the Graphics Processor (GPU)...So I tear apart the case and get at the buggar and follow the kids directions...make a cardboard mask to only heat the GPU and use a 150 watt bulb to get it hot and then smoosh the processor back into the motherboard..then use a penny as a heat sink and put the bastage back together....Well the sombiatch is working.. Will be reloading the OS and keeping an eye on it..cost me $20 bucks for thermal paste and a big spotlight,,and I learned alot about laptop repair. His video is at...

Boog's Birthday debachle

I took Friday off to celebrate Margaret's /(her nickname-for that matter, both our nicknames for each other is Boog or Boogie) Boog's birthday with her. We had been planning for a while to go wine tasting in Lodi and after freaking months of talking up Wine and Roses, we were going to have "big girl" lunch there! I know one winery in Lodi, so that's where we started, Jessies Grove. Ok, so its closed...no worries, they open in an hour-we'll come back. So lets check out Wine and Roses...we got there while the staff was still going over the specials and such...so we had to walk around a bit before getting seated. We start with a glass of wine, Boog red and me White. Out comes my white nicely chilled and Boog's slightly warm Red. Perfect...now this is what we came for, a true indulgence. We start with an appetizer that was good, and accented the wine well. Then we hear the "specials" and opt for what we understood as a crab BLT sandwich...ok, here's where things went South for me...a few minutes later out comes this deep fried creature sandwich...now mind you, I've had soft shelled crab before and really not a huge fan. But after the first bite included the fish flavor of the deep sea....bleck! I put it down and see Margaret is doing ok and I look down at mine and a spider walks out from under the half I had already noshed on, it was a bitty spider, but a spider nonetheless. As casually as I can I ask Boog, so "kinda fishy?" and she's a TROUPER. She's like "um yeah"and promply takes the crab off hed sandwich and proceeds to try to enjoy the remaining BLT. By that time my tummy was in knots. I'm no snob and if you know me, I eat my share of fish...but between the soft shell crab and the spider...that was like 14 more legs than I wanted on my plate. So the waitress kindly asked "how was everything?" Before I knew what was happening I was telling her of my dissatisfaction and she was asking if there was anything she could get us to "make things right." I was twisted in belly knots...so different food was not an option...MORE WINE! Then the Hostess came over and she was GREAT, she joked that we didn't like the legs hangin out our buns and I had to tell her, it wasn't just that but the spider was the topper. Note first time Margaret knew of THAT development...needless to say, they comp'd our entire meal and added a free dessert. So ya win some, ya lose some... We returned to Jessies Grove for a little tasting and then headed for a little shopping. We found the HomeGoods in Elk Grove and had a orgasmic shopping fest-which made up for the funky lunch.

Saturday we headed up the hill to see Margaret and Mikes new house in Penn Valley. Rich offered to help move the heavy stuff, as my back is in a bad way...and I moved pillows and lamps. Margaret and Mike have been living in their guest house waiting for the "Final" on their house which has been an ordeal, as expected building your own house. We only worked a couple of hours but it was unbelievable to finally see the house after hearing her stories for months.

Halloween fun

So I get a bug in my butt and there's no stopping me. I heard Rich say that he wanted to incorporate our Trailer Woody in this years festivities...so I embraced it. A Swiss Chalet deserves Swiss themed characters. I rented costumes that did wht we needed them to be and it was downhill from there. We woke up Saturday morning with a spark in our step, we separated with the divide and conquer. Rich headed to Home Depot and I heade to my fav thrift store, then Target. I grabbed sandwiches and ran home to compare notes. While inhaling our lunch we delighted in unveiling everything we'd found. We had gumdrop lights, gingerbread cookie placemats and lite up candy canes...we were a flurry of activities. Then we attempted to nap-hah! both our brains are racing a million miles an hour so a nap just wasn't in the cards....I think Rich changed an was ready for kids at 5:30 but we were an hour or so away from dark. So I ordered a pizza and donned my outfit...we went with the Hansel and Gretel story with a witch in our makeshift oven in Woody! We had Barverian music playing too. Lori O came over to verify just how crazy we were...but she was encouraging and we were in it for the long haul. Kids came and it was really the Parents that thought we were a hoot. Oh then there was the beer...yes in a accordance to all codes of Baveria...we drank our weight in beer and wound the night down after putting all the decorations away tucked away, safe and sound. But noone can say we didn't commit...

You might ask me why it took me soooo long to get home today . I'd explain that I went to three Targets to try to buy Chiso a Halloween costume. They have a squirrel costume that was sooo cute and the plus is Rich's advertion to squirrels...Yes, I think I'm funny...but no freekin luck...so here's our baby without a costume...Look how big Chiso's getting and does't it look like they're related????

some successes were had this weekend other "epic fails." Probably the greatest find was learning the beauty that is Pabst Blue Ribbon...and what a perfect palate it is for launching into Bloody Beer and Spicy Lemon Beer-thanks Dad's.

Saturday was for chores, storm clean up and a bit of art. I tried another endevor with Art Silver Clay and fracked it up...expensive mistake...but then there was Rich's Sushi meal today, Great to see ya Mark.

As for Chiso, she's growing so fast. She is sleeping through most nights. We have keep her close to home for another three months but trying to get her comfortable with walking on a leash...check out her new coat.

whelp we attended the opening night at the Auburn Speedway and closed it out this last Friday. Friday wasn't the standard race but the finale was six locals and two Germans, two Poles, and two Danes (right Brian???). It was fun but I missed the sidecars!!!!

Oktoberfest at the Turn Vrehn

Friday night was the annual Arts and Craft fair and sushi. Saturday...yard upgrade...a furthering of Rich's vision...plus puppy-proofing the fence. Then off to the Turn Vrehn to meet the Holloways. We walked in, bought enough drink and food tickets to choke a horse...we committed up front. Rich was in heaven, steak tartar, landjaeger, beer and snasuages-oh muy! The music was raucous, people had been drinking long before we started and the place was packed! Sacramento continues to amaze me lately and really turn downtown into a mini-city with style. Plus we ran into my hairdresser and friend, Deanna who was out looking to parTEE. We had a great time gabbing and soaking up the events. Holloways- you guys all rock and Rich and I are working on his "dipping" skills....while I ice my butt.

two weeks ago we attended Rich's company party again at the Holloways. Rich was sushi chef for over 20 people...don't know who was happier, Rich or everyone else...he even converted some non sushi people into fans.

then this weekend we had a Scrabble date with Derek and Meghan....great dinner date, beers and a Scrabble win (thank you, thank you) Then Saturday was a visit to the Squeeze Inn...I was telling my Mom about it and she called the burger accessory...the cheese skirt-perfect.

Then Sunday, Farmers Market, Sunday cooking and football. All the while being chomped by Chiso :D

She's sooo dang cute and needs to be poked with a stick so we can get sleep tonight. I haven't slept one good night this week but think we are all adjusting...Chiso has gotten the most harassment from Meeps, but guess that was to be expected.

As for our outings, we attended a department function with my Kaiser coworkers. To start the day we met with a few coworkers at a winery...tasting at 11:30 am is a bit early but some really good wine. Plus its nice to learn about coworkers, find bizarre connections and laugh freely...I get all twisted (self imposed) up but this outing was a freeforall, much laughing, smile and stories. For something I was majorly angsting about, for weeks...it turned out to be sooooo enjoyable. We geocached with friends Ellen and Barry and visited one of most favorite state parks, Grinding Rocks. Barry is quite willing sacrafice for the sake of the cache...to the point he was lost in the woods and we were yelling his name to find him. Rich took some artful shots to of this beautiful park . Then we headed to the campgrounds where the entire group was and shared some more stories, toured the campground and enjoyed time with coworkers without one "work" word uttered :D

We had to excuse ourselves early as we were on puppy watch, then planned a 2nd Saturday trip to Zelda's to see Rich's friend, the drummer of the Imaginots.

And Sunday was for staying home...football (a Giants and Dallas win) and face time with the furry fam...enjoy some of our artsey shots. Its 7:23pm and I'm already considering bedtime...sweet dreams to all.

So my personal Crack is PetFinder.com...I have been ready to "re-balance" our family by adding another pooch. Tig will NEVER be forgotten...and I am ok to move on, I have been working with an adoption agency to find a new being to share our lives. Friday they said we could come and see a puppy that resembled Tiger Lily ...so all Friday Night between any break in conversation at the Hot Italian with Anna and Troy...I waited to hear next steps. NO NOTICE. Then Saturday we started the final a piece front yard ....meaning trips to Silverado, Home Depot and Hasties (gravel pit). Every time I came into my kitchen I checked the ol crackberry NOTHING...Then Sunday, more "hard labor" between crackberry checks NO WORD.... but sushi-yum...

Today I woke up, dragged arse outta bed at 7:45 and yes checked the CB...and 7:25am was a message from Pet Adoptions saying we could meet the (second) puppy that we were interested in...if we could do it early...next thang ya know we are rattling down the road to Manteca. And Rich was smitten with a meer nibble of his nose...Meet Chiso

100's one day and the other in the 90's....

guess which day we decided to go for a 12 mile bike ride on? Doh! Flippen unbelievably hot but the trip up to Fair Oaks was fun and easy...and the goal stop was the Sunflower Drive In in Old Town Fair Oaks. The retro hippies veggies stand is wonderful and mobbed with chickens...as is most of Old Town. I had a nuttie taco and Rich had some black bean burrito-both delish. (Bryce the chickys say Hi)

((is that a chicken butt?)) The ride home was even hotter. Thankfully we made a pit stop at friends, Tim and Christine's for some shade and suntea...but getting to their home we took "the secret path" and it was weeds, dirt (I know I know its on the river, what am I to expect???) but the point is ...I was having troubles with my wrists (gawd I'm old) and Rich stops to pick his bike up and over a cable. And I slow down, to look/talk to a family who's right there and Plop...don't know if the distraction, sun exhaustion or my wrists gave out...but I "came to" laughing my ass off, in a mini dirt cloud. All I could say to these people was, "gawd, I'm so glad you were all here to see that :O] Now the AC at Tim's was delish but we had to get back to our car ...in the blasing heat so I knew the inevitability of the ride back in the oven. So we got back on the bike path, passed the park with the train (Haggin something) and there on the bike trail, was signs for a farm stand, it was soo precious I couldn't resist. So we had to manuever our way through the farm, to the stand and bought some "heaven sent" Heirloom tomatoes, Pulouts and basil. I tottled all the way back to our car perhaps a little sticker covered, sweat covered but heart full.

Then we came home, showered (I popped two Aleve) and we headed to the comfort of AC at the movies theater. We saw District 9 and the social commentary was huge, it was hard to watch but moving....moving like V for Vendetta was for me.

Then a nosh on Sushi and headed home for a light evening. Today was chores and cooking for the week...great weekend and hope you all had a even better one. Plus I can't ignore the TV telling the story of all the fires in Auburn and it reminds me to be thankful for everyday. Hugs to you all. Lob K

Holloway adventure #17

Our third Indy adventure with Team Holloway. And it was "all in" this time. We got there early, ate a donut, assisted in packing the "short bus," procured our seat and in no time...it was "game on." We had packed our secret Tecate, limes, snacks, knitting (not for eating) and baby carrots...nothing says Indy like baby carrots. The posse this year was the usual suspects with the additional our our bestie bud and son, Mark and Mason. From the moment we got there, it was walking walking walking...we did the garagage, all the concessions and ended in the pits before the races. The only rub was no one under 18 could go in and we only had 5 minutes before the deadline into the pits....so Rich and Mark headed in...while Mason and I waited outside the pits...we got to see some of the racers. Mason had to school me on the who's and which teams. I was all like, "do we know him??? do we like him??? who's that????" He was gracious and clued me in. Brian I've learned alot through your tutilage but I still have a long way to go in learning Nascar, Indy, Formula, Motorcycle and sidehack racers.

They out came Mark...I was tapped in. So mistakenly I wound up with the racers...right next to the cars....so without being stopped I kept walking to connect with Rich...and once he saw me...he's like what tha...get outta there. Then once beyond the barracade they tell us all we were going to have to leave...as the race was starting...so Rich and I kept sneeking through to only reach the actually starting line and there she is...freaking Danica Patrick. She and Franchetti had to stop into the portapotty...before the race. Now Rich impressed the hell outta me, being the ultimate Danica fan...he allowed her the privacy to pee in silence...but check out our pictures...pretty impressive.

Then we literally had to run back to our seats, behind turn 9 and cracked a cold one. And though we missed the start but soon thereafter...lap three...huge crash. Major upset for the race....but not much jockeying after Franchetti took the front spot...And Danica got seventh (I think). Either way the adreliane gets turbobusted during the race...you sit, barely able the hear the person next to you, eyes bugged and for me...my ponytailed whipped back and forth watching the racers.

Thanks for a crazy post race meal at not the Chili's in Dixon. Best trip ever and my one question is, what time did Jennifer show up to work? and Montreal????

Lynch family visitpolozza

Awaiting the Lynch visit... Rich dressed up the guest room, painted and rearranged all our pictures in the hallway. Rich started by picking Ian up from the train station Friday afternoon...Ian's busy preping for his third year at UCSF...so he's relatively close by....and Cookie, Tom and Tyler fought the traffic from So Cal but showed up soon so the sushi fest could begin. Rich was, of course prepped to the "in"eth degree...and flourished in new converts. And they loved everything, especially the scallops...Tyler even joined in the chef duties. It was a great night, a few Chang's were drank and having face time with the entire family was precious. And the boys spending the night in Woody, in our driveway was hysterical-but the beer helped them sleep all night long!!! I love them all soooo-wish we lived closer together. This morning they supped on fruit and some coffee, as they needed to be out early for their Shasta house boating adventure. I love their visits but they could come sooner together.

Two weeks-ish ago my sister and I went to her granddaughters (my grand neices) first birthday, yes in TEXAS. I volunteered to go to Texas in July and yes it was worth every sweaty, sticky, drippy moment. I got to catch up with my nephew Noah and his lovely wife, Theresa. We reconnected with Faye, and were introduced to Noah and Theresa's friends and extened family...all were true jewels. The true star of the event was Jaylee...relishing in all the fuss and muss enjoying a million 1st year birthday gifts.
She was showered in all kinds of love. Plus, I learned what they play in Texas...when drinking...WASHERS. Kinda a mix of bocce and horseshows...loved it. You'll see fun was had by all, some more than others but my sister and I couldn't have been more welcome

The next day we dedicated ourselves to tour-isty stuff...so we headed off to Grapevine. We shopped are tootsies off and even found a craft fair where we could make our own pendants.

Next the food tour of Austin. Yes I "get" Austin is a party time but had no idea how big a party town it was...needless to say-we stayed focuesed on our goal... and we sampled crabcakes, fried okra, pecan crusted chicken, breakfast tacos and yes sushi....all I can say is even though it was hot, Texas was a hoot...yeah ha, love our expanded family!

Not that our broken hearts are 100% but they are healing...and we had another mishap this week...probably my fault. I have been plagued with the menacing summer cold and Lysol'd the entire house down...'fraid thats when it happened, Our oldest Lovebird Talyon overcome by fumes passed away...my heart and head couldn't intially understand why the sudden appartently bizarre passing but after some research...poor Talyon was up against the "perfect storm" as Teflon is toxic to Lovebirds (maybe all birds), as are air fresheners and scented candles...so for those who know me...I'm a scent whore...I love, I mean LOVE my difusers, Salt City (you know those ultra scented ones) candles...and the day of Talyon's passing not only did I use the Teflon pan for said therupeutic grilled cheese sandwich on sick day, I had a scented candle going and the difuser was unplugged and turned sideways...so all the goo leaked out (yes right by the birdcage) and then there was the birage of lysol. Oh Talyon, for a bird originally destined for Meepers breakfast, we are thrilled you graced our lives for seven years and Pilot is not alone in missing you everyday!

To balance this post I offer ourtherapy adventure to remind us, Life moves on...no matter how funky and hard...you have to move on. So with Lori O watching our flock we headed to San Francisco Friday afternoon. We had tickets (bought months in advance) to see the Tut exhibit, at the De Young and tickets to Wicked. We go into the city around 7, headed straight to sushi and for those under 18 don't read the rest of this (or those easily offended) last time we were in Japantown I eyed, and yeah laughed at one of the many sushi choices ...this place was called FUKU Sushi. So thats where my sights were set....after all we"ve been through it only seemed appropriate that we had a little FUKU Sushi (sorry, I realllllly think I'm funny) and actually the sushi was great. The Kirin, Kirin Large was even better. We relaxed, laughed and enjoyed some delish sushi. Too bad they don't sell shirts...I woulda bought one! Next...beer in our belly we (read, I dragged Rich) to Pica Pica. Pica Pica is a Japanesse photoboutique where yes 12 year old girls go and take pictures, dress up, add glitter and little hearts to these 1X 1 photos that costs $10. But the Sanrio fan in me got caught up, Rich refused past trips...this it was the plusing techno music...scared him to flash backs to Burning man...Thank you beer...I got him in the door. Well I was soooo excited, I didn't let the guy explain all the instructions...then I proceeded to jump up and down (don't ask me why, it just seemed like I needed to jump) and the pictures were not only blurry but then we didn't pick them in time...we wound up with one shot of us....for memory sake.

Then there was today, up and at 'em early...Tut exhibit was great...I was "in to it" only to have RIch tell me at the end...oh he was so disappointed because the sarcogaphous' and the outter boxes of gold where in this exhibit. He had seen it originally in New York in '78 ...I was a little bummed but still something I'd never seen and I was thankful for what I did see.

Next off to the Orpheum for Wicked...Now Bren and Lor all I can say is "GO, run...do not walk" to see this. I have not been so moved by a play ever...I was wracking my sinus bubbling nose and body at different points during the show. (Bren YOU WILL BE A MESS) They took liberities with the story but I didn't mind...I loved it and it....well I'm just going to say it, It touched my soul. And Rich thanks for puting up with my overactive sinuses. It was therapy in ways deeper that I want to discuss...as I have no more liquids left to epp outta my body. I love you all for many kind thoughts...some times theres high points, sometime low...but our motto, is keep it moving forward.

With heavy heart I need to report the passing of our dearest friend, Tiger Lily. 14 plus years have passed with so many adventures, so many furry kisses and walks. Her body plagued with cancer, multiple tumors, lupus...she was deaf and lost 20 plus pounds over the past month...it was time to let her be free. Free from the pain and limitations her body was forcing on her beautiful spirit. Since we purchased our house Tiger was here with us, she was part of all decisions and seen us through a number of changes. It was amazing how a she was just an extension of who Rich and I were...guess thats how parents feel...as she was in essence a combination of both our spirits. I will miss her every day and right now nothing seems to have that special sparkle, like she took that with her. I know life will “right”our ship and we will keep going...but losing this friend, this being who filled me with love and joy is about the hardest thing I've experienced. The cycle of life is inevitable, humbling and plain hard.

At least we have our furry and feathered family to keep us smiling...Penny is trying to get a fly and jumping 5 feet in the air...I know she is just trying to keep us entertained and amused. Plus Rich did get to use his Christmas gift finally...he got to go in a helicopter over Folsom Lake and up the American River...so we definitely have plenty to smile about but the weight of a broken heart taints everything else.

Yesterday started with plunging toilets, backing up into the showers and tub in both bathrooms....Rich had to rush to Home Depot to buy a sewage “snake.” After much fuss, cussing and perhaps a few prayers, he was able to fix our plumbing and although we were two hours behind schedule...the feverish pace ramped up...as we were having a birthday shindig tonight. So we cleaned up the soaked towels, thanks our lucky stars and headed out to do our prep work.

A mere five hours of frenzied house cleaning, backyard grooming and food prep...guests showed up perfectly on time, all with an appetite for fun, friends and food. Let the alcohol flow... as we had worked hard to get to the point in the day to revel in our friends. How lucky are we? So many wonderful, abeit crazy friends...and Anna, no group flashing (this time:P). And her Beau, Troy, once again acted as stealth photojournalist...you'll see he got a number of GREAT shots. THANKS MAN!!!

My only regret was not getting a group shot in front of Mike's cool ride, NEXT TIME! The burgers were great, the day gorgeous and night perfect. Thanks all for making both Rich and I feel so loved.

It is literallly “our” year, in my mind and to go to the Maker's Faire was just tippy top. Maker's Faire is Geek Heaven...or Burning Man "in bayside" and way less dusty. Thanks to Brenda introducing me to Craft magazine a few years ago. Then I learned they had another "brother" magazine called "Make." Craft has girlie projects and Make has more manly projects but both are all about “hand made” projects. From knitting projects to mod'ing computers-custom art clay jewelery to remote controlled cars with a video camera...fun stuff for Rich and I.

So, when we dialed in on the Maker's Faire, a weekend event where all these inventors', artists and crazy dreamers were going to “represent” we were in. And even better was that we shared the event with Brenda, on her Birthday no less. Rich was drawn to the Purchas-able items...LED project and some kind of cell phone recharger that you build in a small Altoid tin...see what I mean, total heaven for Rich. And Bren and I were mesmerized by knitting and felting projects. Then there was reallly cool resin jewelry, stuffed bunnies, paper robot monsters and yes yarn. Then there was the Mentos and Diet Coke guys, yes from the video...hysterical...100 bottles no less. And I was introduce to Steam Punk...crazy retro Victorian with kinda a vampire/goth twist-triporific...all in all great day but next year I'll wear more comfortable shoes to explore the fairgrounds in. Oh did I mention the life sized Mousetrap...you know from the kids game...that was cool, the giant cupcakes vehicles with tricycles in them oh I could go on, but all I want is to know...who's in for next year????

talking with my nephew, Kurtis, on line from Iraq. Its easy to think about the joy of a three day weekend but I have new found respect and reverence to those serving far and near.

As for what filled up our weekend, a little speedway motorcycle sidecar racing in Auburn, hubbabubba fan club, Dad's meal, exploring downtown, little Indy watching, Lodi wine tasting (Jessie Grove and Wine and Roses), Tortie the turtle, Habenero's and a little sun in the backyard. Everything enjoyed but chores had to be done...so today we got things in order and we're ready now...to enjoy fruit salad, ranch beans, bbq'd chicky and ribs...Happy Memorial day and Summer come on in!!!!!!!!

we worked in the yard and it is beauutiful...including a new fountain, sun sail and planted veggies.

I started the weekend early with a day off from work, friday was completely endulgent ...yoga retreat (Jewels you missed the myofascal release class-unbelievibly awesome) and then a feng shui consultation. Our friend Anna is the Feng Shui goddess and she spent alot of time going through the house. She offered a number of suggestions...which is alot of what Rich and I worked on this Saturday and Sunday. Anna you'll be happy with our progress but still loads more to do. I respect your expertise-WOW!

The today, Sunday was more food focused, farmers market, Food Network inspired recipes and a few tummy inspired motivations...Tonight's dinner (cuz appartently we talk alot about food...so don't want to disappoint) Polla Asada chicky burritos with cilantro/jalepeno rice and raddichio pasta salad...Urp...now back to Survior FInalle (I'm just glad Coach is off (TOOL) Now the painful week to get to the long weekend.

Perfect weekend

The fun and games started Thursday with a very unusual adventure of going to opening day/night Trek. We started at the Mall, signed up for the Race for the Cure that Saturday, sushi (of course) and 7:30 first "digital" airing of Star Trek. Rich was in heaven, and I happily tagged along...now I'm a Trek fan too, but after the heels of falling asleep in Wolverine last weekend and giving the late night without a nap...I went into it alittle nervous. Although I allowed my body the opportunity to sleep around 11 times...I didn't sleep a wink. It was great, adventurous ride...even though the "red goo" is highly illogical. The casting was "spot on" and made the experience even better-I highly recommend it. Then Saturday am, 6:00am to be exact, we roused our lazy butts up and outta the house for the Race for the Cure. We do love this run, as it is highly inspirational. Its an active meditation of gratitude...for all those fighting cancers, surviving cancer and those who were lost to cancer-my heart knows its purpose and I joyfully run through the pain...cuz my running is as graceful as Fred Flintstone. Then from the RFTC...we went to Home Depot for plants and pots (and a Mom's day giftie). Then we spent the rest of the day doing house cleaning, food prep and backyard improvements. Theres something to be said about all our accomplishments, all within a day...left us exhausted, calling for pizza and turning the lights out...at 9:01, cuz we couldn't justify going to bed before 9pm.

Then this morning we headed to Mom's but she was off looking at houses....cooooolio, more, I'm sure, to follow, so we kept going to Davis and the Whole Earth Festival. Yes, our annual Hippie pilgrimage...we learned about green living through Hemp, why you shouldn't shave your pits, acid dancing and lentil recipes...alright, I did buy some cool pottery...and check out this ladys creature...happy Moms day to all the Moms!!!

So excited, learned another reason to love knitting. Edda showed me how to felt Friday night. Plus we saw Wolverine-preatty good Saturday, the theater was packed. Then Sunday cooking...major spaghetti with meat sauce-urp! And stuffed mushrooms...hello, yum. Well back to work, stress, swine flu and oh I mean, employment. :P

Months ago we purchased our tickets to the Caleb Greenwood School's Gala Event. oh and silent auction...lets keep that part on the DL...just hope Edda didn't regret inviting us to share the event with all the other parents from Mason and Laurel's school! Cuz we were all in rare form, but it was nice because we had a room at the Hotel where the event was held. Plus its deliscious to stay in a hotel in your home city and SacTown is really lookin and acting like a city (small city). Plus we didn't have to worry about driving...so drink drink dance drink!!!! and yes there was a visit from the Kissing King of Dance...

Mason is turning 9 today and I reminisced a bit. Nine you're learning cocky, sarcasm and defiance...sorry Mark and Edda. Nine is a glimpence into tween's rollercoaster ride to teen-hood. Again, sorry. Mason received the one of the best "boy" gifts ever...a slot car race track...and a buddy to play with him (not Rich). Mas....enjoy...everything speds up from here on out...first your nine, then your 49 before you know it. Enjoy and love Kris!

My Mom turned 70

so I indulged her and me. She and I went shopping at Home Goods up in Roseville (one of our favorite stores) and I tried to journal our events through film....but you'll she her amusement quickly wanes. Yes, then there was 'rita's at Mas (flippen yum), next toes at my safely clean establishment....then off to Marshall's. I got a killah lamp....I am so glad to have pure "face time" with my Mom celebrating her natal day. an utterly perfect day in the city

Our friend Vicky had a 40th shindig in Oakland/Berkeley at the Conga Lounge. 40th, yes she's a meer youngster in my book but rockin it. With the new baby at her folks, she and Richard gathered their friends and shared drink and delish food at this funky bar!

Not only did our adventure get us out of town, expose us to some cewl new places and opportunity to meet some new friends...plus Top Dog...since we tried to go for my birthday but it was closed...I needed to satisfy the urge. Then a quick stop at the Berkeley Marina (my power spot)...an utterly perfect day.

And Vicky trust me, I've been in my 40's for a while, they are not too bad-enjoy!
